Khana khane ki Dua with Urdu & English Translation

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ guided us with stunning duas (supplications) to recite before, for the duration of, and after meals. These duas remind us that food and sustenance come most effectively from Allah.
Khana Khane Se Pehle Ki Dua
In Arabic:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى بَرَكَةِ اللَّهِ
In Urdu:
اللہ کے نام سے (شروع کرتا ہوں) اور اللہ کی برکت کے ساتھ۔
In English:
In the name of Allah and with the blessings of Allah, I begin eating.
If You Forget at the Start
If a person forgets to say “Bismillah” before starting the meal, the Prophet ﷺ advised to say:
In Arabic:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ
In Urdu:
اللہ کے نام سے (شروع میں بھی) اور آخر میں بھی۔
In English:
In the name of Allah, at the beginning and at the end.
Khana Khaane Ke Baad Ki Dua
In Arabic:
الْـحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ الَّذِیْ اَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ
Urdu Translation:
تمام تعریفیں اللہ کے لیے ہیں جس نے ہمیں کھانا کھلایا، پینے کو دیا، اور ہمیں مسلمانوں میں سے بنایا۔
English Translation:
All praise is for Allah, Who fed us, gave us drink, and made us Muslims.
Another Short Dua After Eating
In Arabic:
الْـحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ
In Urdu:
تمام تعریفیں اللہ کے لیے ہیں۔
In English:
All praise is due to Allah.
Etiquettes (Adab) of Eating in Islam
The Prophet ﷺ taught several manners related to eating:
- Begin with “Bismillah.”
- Eat with your proper hand.
- Eat from the aspect nearest to you.
- Avoid wasting meals. Do not criticize meals.
- After completing, say “Alhamdulillah.”
- Wash your hands before and after consuming.
- Sit properly whilst ingesting — not reclining.
Benefits and Wisdom
- Gratitude: These duas remind us to thank Allah for every blessing.
- Protection from Satan: Taking the name of Allah keeps Satan at some distance from our food.
- Barakah (blessings): Food eaten with the remembrance of Allah brings happiness and spiritual benefits.
- Good Manners: Following the Sunnah in manners displays area and politeness.

“When a person mentions Allah’s name upon eating, Shaytan says: ‘You have no share in this food.’ But if he forgets, Shaytan eats with him.”
